Raylite Batteries South Africa commenced producing lead acid batteries for automotive, standby (reserve power), UPS, material handling and mining locomotive applications.
Raylite was established in 1947 and has always supplied starter batteries (SLI) to South African Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). Toyota has been a customer for more than 40 years and currently more than half of all new vehicles manufactured and sold in South Africa are fitted with Raylite Starter batteries. Globe Union acquired a share in Raylite in 1973, this share was transferred to Johnson Controls Incorporated (JCI) in 1981. Johnson Controls Inc. disposed of this share to Metair Investments in 1988.
A significant portion of vehicles exported from South Africa are fitted with Raylite branded batteries.
Well known makes of vehicles supplied by Raylite include DaimlerChrysler-Mercedes Benz - Mitsubishi, Nissan, BMW, Toyota and MAN.
